Hard drives are mechanical devices with moving parts, and all mechanical devices wear out over time. This is why maintaining a backup – ideally multiple backups – is so important, no matter how well you take care of your hardware.

Hard Drive Head Stack Issues – Dropping an external hard drive, or a laptop containing an internal hard drive, is one of the most common causes of serious data loss. When a hard drive is dropped, the read/write heads can make contact with the platter surface causing a head crash. In cases brought to Data Savers LLC promptly with minimal attempts to power on the device, successful recovery rates are typically in the range of 99% to 99.9%. The key is not to keep trying to power on a dropped drive as each attempt risks further damage.

WD drives — the My Passport, My Book, WD Elements, and Easystore — are the most common drives we recover. Often the disk inside is fine and only the small electronics in the case have failed, so a WD drive that won’t show up, isn’t recognized, or clicks after a drop is usually still recoverable. Seagate

Seagate drives — including the Backup Plus and Expansion externals and the Barracuda desktop drive found inside many of them — are the other brand we see most.
