WD My Passport Data Recovery — Not Showing Up, Clicking or Dropped

bus-powered portable WD My Passport that isn't showing up Data Savers LLC

The WD My Passport (and My Passport Ultra) is the most common drive people bring us — small, portable, and easy to drop. The good news is that in most cases your files are still safe. The one thing that makes a My Passport different: its data is encrypted inside the case, so a failed My Passport can’t simply be opened and read like an ordinary drive.

Common WD My Passport problems

It shows in Device Manager but won’t read, or won’t show up at all

A very common My Passport pattern: the drive appears in Device Manager or Disk Management but never opens, or it doesn’t show up on any computer. Because the My Passport encrypts data on the small board inside its case, the recovery has to work with that board and its keys — pulling the bare drive out won’t give you your files. We handle this correctly so nothing is lost.

You dropped it and now it clicks, buzzes, or won’t read

My Passport drives have thin cases with no shock protection, so a desk-height drop is often enough to cause a head problem. People describe a continuous buzzing “as if it’s trying to read,” a repetitive click, or the drive simply not showing up after the fall. Power it off — this is clean-room work, and it recovers well when caught early.

It no longer powers on

If your My Passport gets no light and no spin, the small board in the case (or its USB port) has usually failed. The disk and your data are typically fine; the drive just needs to be read another way.

Whatever the symptom, stop using the drive. For a My Passport, don’t keep plugging it into different ports hoping it mounts — and don’t try to “initialize” it. The sooner it reaches our clean room, the better the outcome — and the free evaluation tells you exactly what’s recoverable.

Frequently asked questions

Can you recover a WD My Passport that was dropped and is clicking?

Yes. A dropped, clicking My Passport is one of the most common recoveries we do. Stop using it immediately — each power-on risks more damage — and send it in for a free evaluation.

My My Passport is encrypted — can you still get my data?

Yes. My Passport drives encrypt data by default, which is exactly why the bare disk can’t just be pulled out and read. We recover the data working with the drive’s own encryption, and return your files to you.

It shows in Device Manager but won’t open — is my data lost?

Usually not. That pattern points to the case electronics or the drive’s startup information, not erased data. Please don’t initialize or format it; bring it in and we’ll recover it safely.

WD My Passport drives we recover: WD My Passport, My Passport Ultra, My Passport for Mac, and My Passport Works (WDBxxx models).
